About 15% of Americans experience dental anxiety. There are different levels of dental anxiety but it ranges anywhere from nervousness in your stomach to an uncontrollable physical reaction. This can stem from a story you heard from family and friends, a movie you’ve seen, or a past negative experience. While it is a very real problem, regular checkups with your dentist should not be avoided. Instead, we have come up with some tips to help overcome dental anxiety.
- Be open with your doctor about your fears. If the Doctor knows just what it is that is causing your fear, he can do his best to calm them.
- Breath. When people are nervous, they tend to hold their breath, which decreases oxygen levels and increases feelings of panic. Slow and regular breathing will help to reduce anxiety.
- Watch what you eat and drink. Try avoiding caffeine and sugary foods before your dental visit. High- protein foods produce a calming effect.
- Listen to some music. Brookline Village Dental likes to play music in the office but sometimes it isn’t loud enough to block out all the sounds. Bring in your headphones to help tune out the sound of the drill if that bothers you.
- Choose a low-stress appointment time. Find a time with the office manager when you’re less likely to be rushing and/or under pressure.
We assure you that you are in good hands here at Brookline Village Dental!
